Causality

Causality
CAUSE & EFFECT

Causality is the relationship between an event (the cause) and a succeeding event (the effect),
where the second event is understood as a consequence of the first. In this understanding of the consequential termination of these events, humans come to know the end as a result. Further, humans recognize the dynamics of this relationship to be what is called change.(see Change)

The philosophical concept of causality dates back to the Greek philosopher Aristotle and has continued to be maintained thought out Western contemporary philosophy.
Aristotle explained the concept by distinguishing the process into four discreet types:

Material Cause -- in the Universe of material things material cause is considered the physical matter, the raw material of which things are made or which they consist, the ingredients.

Formal Cause -- relates the plan or pattern that determines the intended use for the material cause, for which the raw material will be shaped or made to be.

Efficient Cause -- is that which is external to the material to move or to force to move the material
(change) according to the Formal Cause, in execution of the plan in order to accomplish the end or
objective for which the plan had determined. The Efficient Cause may be a physical entity external to
that which is being changed or it may be an immaterial internal cause such as existence or essence (form).

Final Cause -- is the end for which the Formal Cause had intended. It may be called the Effect or Result when the purpose of the plan is accomplished.

Agency : Beings, that is things or entities, can be the causes of one another, they may reciprocally be the cause of the other or can be serial in their functionality such as in a cause and effect series (parents are the cause of progeny, who are progeny from their parents). Further, Efficient cause can be internal as is found in nature.

Necessary causes: If (x) is a necessary cause of (y), then the presence of (y) necessarily implies the presence of (x). The presence of (x), however, does not imply that (y) will occur.

Sufficient cause: If (x) is a sufficient cause of (y), then the presence of (x) necessarily implies the presence of (y). However, another cause (z) may alternatively cause (y). Therefore, the presence of (y) does not imply the presence of (x).

Contributory causes: As was stated above, cause in sequence may be classified as contributory causes, if the cause precedes an effect, altering the cause, it alters the effect. Contributory cause are neither necessary nor sufficient, but must be contributory.
